By Kum Martin Ancient Egyptian civilization started in 3150 BC along the banks of the Nile River when the Lower and Upper Kingdoms of Egypt were united under the rule of the first pharaoh. For the next three millennia, the kingdom flourished and then in 31 BC, the kingdom faded as it was conquered by the Roman Empire. The ancient Egyptians were smart and intelligent and, contributed to practically each and every field of life through their numerous inventions. Some of the Egyptian inventions were as follows: Today, we take paper for granted in all forms. However, the credit for inventing paper goes to the ancient Egyptians who invented papyrus. This form of paper was made from a plant known as Cyperus papyrus which grew along the banks of the Nile River. The plant was also used to make sandals, mats, baskets and ropes. The quality of the papyrus was superior as many ancient Egyptian texts written on papyrus have survived the rigors of time and have been found in perfect condition by archaeologists. Black ink is another ancient Egyptian invention. It was made from soot, vegetable gum and bees wax. When they wanted ink in a different color, the soot was removed and some other organic component was used. A plow drawn by an ox changed the way the Egyptians grew crops. The plow helped to loosen and aerate soil much faster than using hands. Even today, a modified version of the plow is used in the rural areas of Egypt. The clock is another invention that the Egyptians gave the world. Today, we cannot imagine living a life without knowing the time. The ancient Egyptians invented not one but two types of clocks. One was the sun clock and the other the water clock. It was with the help of the sun clock, the Egyptians determined which were the longest and shortest days in the year. The water clock was invented somewhere between 1417 BC and 1379 BC when Amenhotep III was the pharaoh. Besides these, there were many other inventions that the ancient Egyptian gave the world.
