Viking families lived in extended households with grandparents, parents and children. Any servants or slaves would also live in the house. Most families had farms and the farm workers would also live in the house. When the father would travel, the mother took over the duties of running the farm. She was responsible for making sure that the food lasted through the winter. Keys to the the house and food storage and were always around her waist. At a certain age, the oldest son in the family was responsible for taking over the family farm and became the head of the household.
