The Vikings dined on farm animals as well as animals from the wild, such as deer. They ate vegetables and made bread from the crops grown on their farms. Fish was also an important part of their diet and they would preserve it in salt water or by smoking. The children collected wild nuts and berries. The berries were often dried and preserved and the nuts were kept fresh in their shell until consumed. The Vikings liked feasts and would celebrate several times a year. Roasted horse meat or lamb would be served with beer and mead. Only rich Vikings would drink wine. The Vikings most commonly boiled their food in iron pots. Meat and vegetables would be boiled together with spices.
