With many families juggling work, school and activites, how often do they sit down together and start their day with breakfast? Store shelves are stocked with on-the-go breakfast items and it's too easy to drive through and pick up a morning sandwich. All it takes is a little planning to have a family breakfast together. Do the prep work the night before. Set the table, put in place any cooking utensils you might need, mix up the frozen orange juice and whisk up the scrambled eggs. Just a few extra steps will be worth the extra time in the morning. Start out small. Plan on one family breakfast together per week. Once this becomes a habit, it will be easy to add more days later on. Get everyone involved by giving each family member a task. If everyone works together, it will be a breeze preparing breakfast. Making toast, pouring juice, setting out cereal and clearing the table are all great ways to work together.
Double task. Muffins or biscuits can be baking in the oven while you are getting dressed for example. Breakfast can be simple. Oatmeal and fruit, cereal and juice or toast and scrambled eggs are all easy and quick to make. Make conversation. Ask what each family member will be doing that day and what they hope to accomplish. Keep the commitment. Set the example by not missing breakfast with your family. If Mom and Dad don't sit down, the kids won't want to either. Most of all stay positive. Think of breakfast as a wonderful time to bond with your family as you start your day. Attitudes can be contagious!
