Poor children in ancient Rome were taught to read and write at home. Rich children went to school or were taught by a tutor at home. School was for boys only and the girls were taught by their mothers to cook and sew in preparation to be a good wife. It was a father's duty to teach his sons Roman laws, history and how to prepare for war. A boy's school day was long, beginning at sunrise and ending just before sunset. School was very strict and students were often beaten with a whip for getting an answer wrong. Students wrote on wax covered boards with a small stick. The wax could be rubbed smooth for each new lesson. Small objects such as stones were used for math studies. Ancient Traditions... Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
