Viking Territory

Though originating in Scandinavia, Viking territory eventually included conquests in Britain, France, Russia and Sicily. The Vikings also made settlements in Iceland and Greenland. The Vikings first conquest came in the 8th century AD when they fiercely attacked the monk inhabited British island of Lindisfarne. Years later the Vikings were attracted to the riches housed by monasteries and seized locations in both Britain and Ireland. The Vikings gained more territory in England and Ireland over the next three hundred years. In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Vikings set out on the Northern seas and settled in Iceland and then Greenland. Eventually after four centureis, Greenland was abandoned due to the harsh climate and poor living conditions. In the 10th century coastal areas of France were attacked by the Vikings which led to more Viking settlements. Russia was next for the Vikings with conquests being made in the 9th and 10th centuries.
