Viking weapons were heavy and strong to withstand the fierce fighting nature of the Vikings. Some weapons were embedded with gems to show the social status of the soldier. The Viking's favorite weapon was the spear. It was the least expensive to make and could be thrown a long distance. The Vikings also had swords but these were only reserved for the highest ranking soldiers. Other Viking weapons included the battle axe, daggers, bows and arrows. The Vikings protected themselves with iron helmets and shields made of wood and leather.
