Waffles- A History

Waffles have long been a breakfast tradition whether made from scratch or reheated in the toaster. There is something warm and comforting about waffles that are dripping with syrup and butter, but it did not start out that way.

The first waffles, which were originally called wafers, may have been made in Greece. They were flat cakes pressed between two plates and cooked over an open flame. These wafers were also know to have been made during the middle ages when waffle irons were made into coat of arms and iconic symbols. The wafers were made with whole grains that were savory, not sweet. All classes of people ate wafers at this time, though the upper classes may have had better ingredients in their wafers. During the 13th Century, the wafer became the waffle with the same honeycomb shape that we know today. Waffles were sold on the street for various celebrations and outside of churches. In the 1600's waffles were brought to America by the Dutch.

Waffles became extremely popular in America and were served in new ways. Street vendors sold waffles with honey or syrup. Waffles were also used as a base for chicken or stews. Eventually a stove top waffle iron was invented and patented by Cornelius Swarthout in 1869. Waffles continued to gain popularity with waffle cones, freezer to toaster waffles and the famous Belgium waffle.
